Procedures: Wrinkles

Laser and fat injections

Fine lines and wrinkles are the result of ageing and accumulated skin damage. Excessive exposure to sun, smoking and bad diet can also exacerbate the natural ageing process resulting in premature ageing.

Advances in technology have created a range of treatments to combat wrinkles. Expert knowledge and careful assessment will guarantee the best results.

Laser skin resurfacing is becoming the most popular form of wrinkle control. During the procedure, a laser is used to deliver a precise pulse of energy to remove the outer skin wrinkle layer, allowing the regrowth of healthy skin with better alignment of collagen fibres. The laser can be applied to specific areas, such as under the eyes or upper lip, or used on the entire face. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium lasers are the most popular laser used in facial resurfacing.

Chemical peels and dermabrasion are also used in wrinkle control.

During a chemical peel, one of several chemicals of varying strength is applied to the skin removing the epidermis and penetrating the dermis.

Dermabrasion is often used to smoothe deeper scars and wrinkles. A high-speed rotating brush is used to slough off layers of skin to achieve the desired effect.

Before embarking on laser resurfacing, chemical peels or dermabrasion your surgeon will discuss the best option for you. Each procedure has differing recovery times.

Injections are fast becoming a popular method of wrinkle control with the added incentive of it being a quick, easy treatment that can be carried out during a lunch-break.

A muscle relaxant can be injected into the muscle. The procedure is often used to reduce crows’ feet or frown lines, typically between the eyebrows. Injections can also be used to enhance the results of an eyebrow lift.

Another procedure used to combat wrinkles is fat injection. This involves using the patients own fat, which is injected into facial grooves and depressions. Because fat has variable longevity, the procedure must be performed with special care to ensure the maximum benefits.
